A downloadable <VideoGame object> for Windows and Linux

INJECTION is a programming puzzle game, much like Untrusted, Else Heart.Break(), or Zachtronics' SHENZEN-IO. It's written in Python and indeed that's the language you'll be using to solve the puzzles.

"I had a blast! I played with my brother and I'm really hoping it sparked some interest in programming for him!" -bigv13899

The aim of the game is to guide your @ to the ⌂, navigating treacherous and troublesome obstacles like aggressive automated missile launchers and deadly particle-beams while solving puzzles with gravity-altering gizmos and programmable robotic drones.

"I loved INJECTION; it felt like I was actually cheating the game even if that's what I was supposed to do!"
-IAMA_dragon-AMA

You'll never make it without the use of the INJECTION CONSOLE, a command line that lets you run computer code directly against the game world itself, re-targeting launchers, re-programming hostile murder-machines, redirecting troublesome streams of deadly radiation, lighting up the path through a teleporter-maze, or... theoretically, anything!

"This game is great. I hope you're still planning on adding levels to it." -Quicksand-S

But don't be afraid - you don't have to be a career programmer to join in the game! INJECTION has built-in tutorials and hint systems to help you learn as you play; it's specifically designed to provide an engaging challenge to full-bearded code-slinging keyboard-jockeys while simultaneously being accessible to hunt-and-pecking neophytes.

"I need validation to stop feeling like a clever bastard on level 6" -TPHRyan

The game is currently unfinished, but already packs 20 level-loads of blended twitch-action gaming and mind-melting puzzling: an estimated three or four hours of continuous play. Updates come out every month or so, and the game will update itself when the time comes, so check back often and be sure to keep your skills honed!

"damn this is cool." -nugyflex

Install instructions

Just launch INJECTION.exe to begin playing. On Linux the process is a little more involved - check readme.txt for details. The game will check for updates before starting; this may take a few seconds!

I can't accept payment for the game because of licensing agreements - if you want to show your support, send me an EMail instead (but you'll have to beat the game to find my EMail address... :P)

Wonderful experience! I would love to ask you some questions about your game development (especially about your package "pyconsolegraphics"),do you have discord or any other means of communication?

I saw this game recently and decided to try it, but keep running into the problem "Failed to execute script main" whenever clicking start game.

I tried it on my machine just now and it seems to work - can you give me any more details, or try it on a different computer?

(1 edit)

Whenever I load the game, there's no indicator as to what menu option is selected and no keys work besides enter, which just causes the error mentioned before. No log file is created as well. I also don't have another computer to try it on. The image shows what it looks like.

I can replicate the issue. Thanks, should've caught that, will fix it soonish. Just use the mouse there for now, click on the option you want.

i loved your cellular automata

can i create a JavaScript version of your amazing game?

Go for it, although you may want to look at https://alexnisnevich.github.io/untrusted/ :P

Please fix the windows 10 version 😥

(1 edit)

What's wrong with it? Just tried the game myself, seems to work okay.

i can't open the console

and sometimes the game closes with this message: "failed to execute script main"

(1 edit)

sometimes this happens when i press enter

Well shit, that doesn't happen for me. I'll look in the error reporting logs. Can you tell me more details about your system and exact steps to get to the error?

what information about my computer is useful to you? (just not to spam useless information)

(1 edit)

The Windows version is broken. When I try to use the injection terminal it all starts spamming what looks like escaped strings. Not playable. Also it hanged after a while which froze the mouse pointer in windows so I had to Ctr-Alt-Del and force shut it down using the keyboard.

Thanks for the report, I'll look in to it.

Should be dealt with now.

I'm attempting to run this game on Debian 10. I had to run `pip3 install -r requirements.txt` and `pip3 install cython` to get this program to give me an error saying 'Tkinter is required for pymsgbox', which I fixed with `sudo aptitude install python3-tk`. Then if I run tutorial() in the injection console it crashes with this error:

```
$ python3 ./main.py -disable_telemetry
Disabling telemetry for this session.
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0.0"
     after 442 requests (442 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
```

No clue. Try running the built Windows version under WINE?

Guess there's some bug in how the game handles the error report server being down... fixed the server, game should work now.

Did it end up working?

Thanks, glad to hear it.

Hey guys.

I am having trouble running the .exe

I just get always this error:"Failed to execute script main"

Hope somebody already found a solution.

Hey, uh... does the game not work for anyone else? I booted up the EXE version of the game and the console is all messed up making the game unplayable. It wasn't like that when I uploaded it...

It doesn't work, I really want to play it but i keeps crashing and when it doesn't it doesn't go further than the main menu and crashes again when I type con the numerical keyboard.

It's really fun :-) Nice work.
Sorry for a short comment, English isn't my friend :-)

Thanks!

I've only just started but I already know that I LOVE the work that you have put into this project. The levels and tutorials are awesome and well thought out. As an experienced programmer I am humbled by the knowledge you've sunk into the text. I LOVE the music tracks too.  This, to me, embodies real programming / hacking / software-engineering.

I'll admit that I had to stop myself from looking into the code "too close" after reading your comments in main.py -thank you for that honesty and candor. This is truly a work of art.

For those on recent 16.04 Ubuntu systems (mint 18x, etc.): There are several dependencies that need to be met -'pip(3) install <blah>' and wash rinse repeate. For those running pyenv environments it is likely that you may have to wrangle with numpy a little bit -it's not bad if at all.

Also, spoiler-ish: learn what setup.py does before you dig too deep. I'd been away from python basics for a few years so I'd forgotten what I was supposed to do with the package. All the clues are in the README otherwise.

Much love.

Get further in before you decide whether it's a "work of art" or not. :P

Funny thing about the music; it's all Creative Commons stuff but for some of the tracks this game is the only place they exist anymore, or at least they don't exist anywhere indexed by Google. The site I downloaded them from is just another paid stock music site now and if they have the stuff archived they aren't providing it anymore. Means I don't have to worry about it showing up in other games and such, I suppose.

In any case, thanks for the positive feedback. The game itself hasn't gotten an update in a year but that's only because I've been rewriting the "complete garbage" graphics library that backs the game and just started the work of porting it to the new replacement. It's pretty discouraging looking at four year old code that all of a sudden doesn't even build a playable game anymore, but comments like this keep me going.

This is unplayable on a Norwegian keyboard layout. To open injection mode, I can press the ø key, but if I type it in the injection mode to get back out, it types "ø". Tried typing an equals sign and gave up.

It's a shame, game seems cool.

Hey, if i run this on linux i get this error:
Traceback (most recent call last):

   File "main.py ", line 40, in <module>

        import pyximport

ImportError: No module named 'pyximport'

i have tried installing it with pip, tried to find it with sudo apt-get install python3-pyx but nothing worked

Could you maybe help with this?

(1 edit)

@pix31 Yeah, running the source version under Linux requires some extra work. I recommend just running the Windows version under Wine.

The instructions for getting the source version running are here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Injection/comments/4dp7go/attention_linux_users/

You should be careful about trying to guess the names of packages on pypi, people like to put viruses up there with names based on the names people get wrong. Google around before you `pip install` something.

Works okay for me. Try it again?

no it's ok, but the game will not save, even in the first level
